Old Fort Niagara, the oldest fort in North America that has witnessed the French War, and the American Revolution, and was a host of many other battles, is a favorite attraction of all history buffs. It is located on the American side of Niagara and was built to protect New France from enemy attacks.

The area where the fortress is located is extremely picturesque overlooking Lake Ontario and the Niagara River and promises an unexpectedly interesting pastime for visitors. They can visit the rooms where the soldiers were housed, gunpowder rooms, see the preserved artifacts, etc.

The history of Old Fort Niagara began 300 years ago and interest in it arose because of the strategic position around the Niagara River and the Great Lakes. This is the first French fortress to remain permanently, after the short life of Fort Denonville and Fort Conti.

In 1759 the fortress was captured by the British during the so-called Battle of Fort Niagara. It remained under British control during the American Revolutionary War.

After the American War of Independence, Old Fort Niagara became an American possession, although for a few more years the British controlled the region (until 1796). In the following years it was conquered again by the British and then, after the end of the War of 1812, it returned to the Americans.

After this last conquest, the history of Old Fort Niagara remains peaceful. It became a training ground for soldiers until 1963 when the last army was withdrawn.

Over 200,000 visitors annually visit this favorite attraction. It houses one of the largest collections of military artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition, the building is a wonderful example of the then military architecture. Antique weapons, military clothing, flags are just some of the exhibits you can see.
